Process for the preparation of 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-butane-1,4-diol, of the formula I, …… in which 4-hydroxybutyraldehyde, of the formula II, …… and/or 2-hydroxytetrahydrofuran, of the formula III, …… are condensed with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst, the resulting reaction mixture is subsequently subjected to catalytic hydrogenation, and the 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-butane-1,4-diol is isolated from the hydrogenation product.
