A person seeking to establish their identity at a control point carries a microprocessor card (20) which contains morphological data. The data consists of a relatively small number of codes which subdivide the main features of the owner's appearance such as colour of hair and eyes. A microcomputer at the control point has sub-programs which are capable of producing an image corresp. to each subdivision of the main features indicated on the microprocessor card (20) and a coordinating program which builds these images into a photo-fit portrait (18) suitable for accurate identification.
