In a method of making a fibre-optic cable element (12) having a multiplicity of optical fibres (2), which are arranged with excess length inside a pressure-proof metal tube (7), and having means provided inside the metal tube in order to protect the optical fibres and to provide a longitudinal seal, the optical fibres are firstly embedded in a soft or compressible compound (6), the outside diameter of the strand virtually corresponding to the inside diameter of the metal tube in the finished cable, and the optical fibres being present with excess length in the strand.
