PURPOSE:To improve speed of encoding and decoding by processing the input data of plural bits in a batch. CONSTITUTION:A delay device 1 storing the input picture element MCP 101 of the multicolor picture is realized by a line buffer. A context generation circuit 2 inputs the encoded picture data which is stored by the delay device 1 and outputs the context CX103 of the Markov model. The context generation circuit 2 describes the Markov model by the picture elements with the high correlation for the input picture element MCP and generates the context according to the state of the DP 102 to be inputted from the delay device 1. A multilevel arithmetic encoding device 3 inputs the symbol string which represents the input picture element MCP and a context 103 and estimates the generation possibility for the symbol string of plural bits and performs arithmetic encoding. A CODE 104 to be outputted from the encoder 3 is stored in a memory in the case of the picture storage device and it is sent to a transmission line in the case of picture communication device. |
