The method comprises the steps of controlling forward and backward functions at high speed and a play function according to control data applied during an "off" operation of a function selection switch; if the control data is applied in the clock direction, outputting a high backward operational key code and a play operational key code; and if the control data is provided in the clockwise direction, controlling the function of a video tape recorder by outputting a stop operational key code.
