<p>PURPOSE: To reduce misfeed and simultaneous multiple sheet feeding in a copying machine by frequently and continuously adjusting the standard force of a retard nip, which is exerted to the sheet fed to a sheet passage from a stack. CONSTITUTION: If a sheet 17 does not reach a misfeed sensor 14 within a predetermined length of time, a micro-processor controller 21 recognizes it as an occurrence of a nearly misfeed. In the next step, the micro-processor controller 21 detects the phased quantity of changes in optimum perpendicular for the types of the sheets 17 to be fed based on either the property of the predetermined sheet or the dynamic input from an opaque sensor 22 and feeds a retard roll 11 toward a feed roll 10 utilizing a stepper motor 18 to increase the perpendicular force at a retard nip 12. In the case where the increased perpendicular force of the retard nip 12 is not great enough to pass a sheet by means of the retard nip 12, the micro-processor controller 21 makes the retard nip 12 repeat the improvement of its perpendicular force.</p> |
