FUSION SPLICING METHOD OF OPTICAL FIBERS

PURPOSE:To realize low loss by subjecting optical fibers to additional electric discharge at the time of fusion splicing of the optical fibers by utilizing aerial discharge. CONSTITUTION:This fusion splicing method of the optical fibers comprises disposing the ends of the optical fibers 2 making a pair opposite to each other, butting their ends against each other by aligning the axes of their cores and fusion splicing the butt part by the main electric discharge generated by opposite electrodes 3, then subjecting the fusion spliced part to the additional electric discharge. The additional electric discharge is executed at the discharge current of the threshold at which the axis alignment effect of the outside diameters of the fibers is no longer generated by action of surface tension on the fusion spliced part or below and the discharge current in a range larger than the current at which the dopants in the fibers diffuse.
