A worm extruder for continuously dewatering suspensions has a rotary suspension-feeding screw-shaped shaft, a casing that surrounds the screw of the screw-shaped shaft and a downstream compression zone with a variable gap, an inlet for the suspensions to be dewatered at the inlet end of the worm extruder and an outlet for dewatered suspensions at the other end of the worm extruder, downstream of the compression zone. According to the invention, the casing is a liquid-permeable, solid-tight strainer basket. The strainer basket is axially movable in the area of the screw-less compression zone, so as to change the effective length of the compression zone. The strainer basket may be moved between a zero position for emptying the worm extruder, in which the effective length of the compression zone equals zero, and an operation position in which the effective length of the compression zone and the resulting compression pressure in the compression zone correspond to a desired working value. |
