Chiral compounds have the general formula A-Y-(M-Y)n-B-(Y-M)n-Y-A, in which B stands for a residue having the formula (a) or (b); the residues A represent independently from each other C1- to C20-alkyl, if required substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or cyanogen and if required interrupted by O, S, NH, NCH3, COO or OCO; X stands for carbon or boron; the residues Y represent independently from each other a chemical bond, O, S, NH, N(CH3), COO or OCO; the residues M represent independently from each other a mesogene group; and the indices n equal 0 or 1 independently from each other, provided that one n be other than 0. These compounds are useful as dopants for liquid crystal media.
