The piston (44) has a transition (114) between two sections (112,116) of smaller and larger dia. within a sleeve (36) surrounding a helical spring (46) which is compressed between a guide (50) and the end (48) of the piston. The transition is tapered so that a damping space (122) within the sleeve communicates with an annular chamber (30) linked (28) to a cavity (42), via a passage (63) inclined (alpha) to the axis (128). The choice of the angle of inclination determines the effect of the component of pressure or volume flow on the positioning of the piston.
