The invention concerns production of sand moulds by means of an appts. comprising a main mould bottle (2), a bottom auxiliary bottle (1), a top auxiliary bottle (3), a mould plate (5) resiting on the top surface of a movable bottom press head (4), and a top press head (6). Mould san d(9) fed into the space between the top and bottom press heads is compacted by pressing. The invention is characterised by the fact that the bottom surface (10) of the sand (9) is formed arbitrarily by the level of the top surface of the mould plate (5) at the instant when the compacting process is completed.
