A ratchet block (Fig. 1) is arranged so as to enable automatic operation of the ratchet mechanism when under load by a line, and automatic disengagement and free-wheeling when the load is removed. For this purpose the central shaft carrying knob 12 carries a cam located within the sheave 3 and which can displace the sheave to rotate about different axes relative to the side plates 17 so that internal parts (6, 9) (not seen in Fig. 1) co-operate or not with ratchet teeth. Alternatively, (Figs. 13 to 17) the knob 12 is replaced with a slide (53) which moves the ratchet panel vertically between ratchet teeth engaging and disengaging positions while the sheave axis is fixed relative to the side plates.
