For the periodic cleaning of a deep shaft reactor, with a vertical downflow pipe and a vertical upflow pipe, the temps. in the two coaxial pipes are measured virtually continuously during the reactor operation at a number of points spread over the axial length section of the reactor where build-up can develop. The measured temps. give the actual temp. gradients, according to depth, at the pipe wall separating the pipes within each other, for comparison with nominal temp. gradients for a clean pipe separation wall. A cleaning action is triggered if the temp. gradient at any point along the axial length breaches tolerances of deviation from the nominal values.
