Base for a material exchange column has U-shaped troughs which lie with their ends on beams (1, 2) and are held there with screws (7). The space (steam flue) between two neighbouring troughs is bridged by a locking piece (8), which lies with one end of side on the upper edge (4c) of a limb (4b) of a trough (4) and the other end or side on the upper edge (4c) of a limb (4b) of a neighbouring trough (4). The locking piece is fixed permanently or pref. welded to the screw. (7).
