An apparatus for checking the fall in an inaccessible length of pipe laid below ground or under water employs a hose pipe (11) of known cross-section laid in similar fashion to the pipe under examination and connected to a water tank (20). An air line (12) is also laid alongside the hose pipe (11), the pair being enclosed by a protective sleeve (13) and water (21) is allowed to flow into the hose pipe (11) regulated by the valves (22,23,24) under the control of an electronic evaluation unit (32). Hydrostatic pressure differences between hose pipe (11) and air line (22) measured (30) at timed intervals along the run together with water flow from the tank (20) enable evaluation of the pipe fall.
