A polyvinyl alcohol film comprising a complex of a hydroxybenzophenone compound of formula (I) wherein each of X and Y is independently a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxyl group, an amino group, an acyl group, a carboxyl group, a sulfonic acid group or a metal salt thereof, each of a, b, c and d is independently an integer of 0 to 5, (c + d) is an integer of 1 to 10, (a + c) is an integer of 0 to 5, and (b + d) is an integer of 0 to 5, and a least one basic compound which is (i) a hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate of an alkali metal, (ii) carbonate or bicarbonate of ammonium, or (iii) an amine compound, is excellent in blocking ultraviolet radiation in the wavelength range from 360 to 400 nm, and therefore can be used in the optical fields of polarizing sunglasses, the display fields of a liquid crystal display and fields of wrapping materials for clothes or foods. The film may be used as it is or as a laminate with one or more other films.
