The sickbed has a bed base 1 in which a closable waste opening 13 is provided. A waste collector (5, Fig. 2) is mounted around said opening 13 for collecting waste excreted by the patient. The bed base can be configured to support the patient in a sitting position (Fig. 5B). A system is controlled to supply water to spray orifices in the periphery of the waste opening and into the waste collector. Preferably, warm water is directed to the waste opening, and hence to the patient, whilst cold water is used to clean the waste collector. An air dryer (46) is controlled to direct drying air to the patient after the operation of the water supply system. Massagers 15 are mounted on a front bed plate 11 of the bed base 1 and may be controlled to massage the patient. A cover board 2 controlled by a hydraulic cylinder 22, a linkage 21, and a lifting mechanism 4 is arranged to close the waste opening 13 after use. <IMAGE>
