976,099. Acrylonitrile filaments. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Dec. 7, 1961 [Dec. 16, 1960], No. 43828/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5B. In a process for the manufacture of synthetic textile fibres by the wet spinning of acrylonitrile homopolymers, copolymers or mixtures dispersed in an aqueous or water-miscible solvent the gel filament is given a contacting treatment with an aqueous medium at a temperature of 50-80‹ C., cooled, given a final stretch in a heated medium at a temperature of 80-110‹ . and then dried. The fibres are made from polyacrylonitrile or from an interpolymer of at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile together with allyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, methyl acrylate, 2-vinyl pyridine, dimethylaminoethylacrylate, methacrylonitrile, acrylic acid, itaconic acid. Vinyl acetic acid, ethyl acrylate, fumaronitrile, 2-vinyl 5-ethyl pyridine, ethylene sulphonic acid and its alkali metal salts, ally] sulphonic acid and its alkali metal salts. Vinyl lactams such as vinyl caprolactam and vinyl piperidone, vinyl benzene sulphonic acid and its salts, vinyl benzene, trimethyl ammonium chloride, vinylmethyl ether, N-acryloyl taurine and its salts, 2-aminoethyl - methacrylate hydrochloride, 2 - sulphoethyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride. In addition such polymers may be modified by the inclusion of N-vinyl 2-morpholinones, N-vinyl- 2-oxazolidinones and certain N-vinyl-N-methylalkylsulphonamides. Zinc chloride is 60% aqueous solution is the preferred spinning solution but calcium thiocyanate or lithium bromide may also be used.
