The ignition generator includes a source of energy (1) which supplies a transformer and rectifier (2) which charges a capacitor acting as an energy store (3). The capacitor is connected to a discharge circuit (7) containing a sparking plug (8) through a controllable connecting unit (6). The connecting unit (6) is triggered by release units (4,5) which may operate at the normal voltage (51) or a test voltage (S2). When testing at test voltages a detector unit (9) indicates whether or not a spark has been initiated by sensing the presence or absence of current in the parking plug leads.
