In a method of distilling a volatile metal (e.g. Zn, Cd or Pb) from an alloy or residue containing a heavy non-volatile metal (e.g. Fe or Ni) a phosphorus-, or sulphur-containing material (e.g. ferro-phosphorus or zinc sulphide) is added to the feed during the distillation to give a residue which is molten at the temperature of the distillation and which may be tapped off. The addition is preferably made when the bulk of the volatile metal has been distilled off.
|
