Reaction canister and diffuser combination for a motor vehicle inflatable restraint system. The reaction canister has top panel (30) and a bottom panel (32) and the diffuser comprises a tube (20) having an apertured diffuser portion (22) and a cap portion. Loped edges (64,68) of a fabric bag are retained by grooves (68,70) in the assembly. The combination is configured such that a compressed gas container can be inserted into the assembly from one end as a last operation of assembly in order to reduce the hazard constituted by such an assembly during installation in a vehicle. At least one and possibly both diffuser portions may be formed integrally with the top panel (30) and the bottom panel (32). The diffuser portions may be formed with outwardly directed flanges which are connected together and to top and bottom panels by bolts. Alternatively one diffuser portion may be formed with an outwardly directed flange for connection to an integrally formed remainder of the combination.
