The preferred embodiment suggests a method and catalyst useful to effect the oxidation of carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbons present in a diesel exhaust stream generated in the combustion of diesel fuel containing from 0.005 to 0.7 weight percent sulfur, wherein the exhaust gas stream is contacted with said catalyst comprising silica impregnated with one or more noble metals, and optionally with one or more promoters, the type of silica being selected on the basis of its tendency to absorb no more than 0.4 weight percent sulfur at temperatures between 200.degree.C and 400.degree.C.
