PURPOSE:To provide a recording device and a reproducing device with high confidentiality of an image recorded on a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:An electronic still camera 1 is made up of an image pickup section 2, a signal processing circuit 7, a ciphering circuit 8, a changeover switch 9, a control means 12, a ciphering changeover switch 13, a release switch 14, a reproduction switch 15, a recording read section 16, a decoding circuit 17, a changeover switch 18 and an output circuit 21. When the ciphering changeover switch 13 is closed, a picture signal is recorded while being ciphered and when the ciphering changeover switch 13 is open, the picture signal is recorded as it is without ciphering processing. In this case, ciphering discrimination information is recorded altogether. Furthermore, in the reproduction state, whether or not the picture signal is recorded with ciphering is discriminated based on the ciphering discrimination information and when the ciphered picture signal is recorded, the signal is decoded and reproduced, and when the picture signal not ciphered is recorded, the picture signal is not decoded but reproduced as it is. |
