PURPOSE:To obtain high-purity gaseous hydrogen safely and inexpensively by supplying crude gaseous hydrogen to a refining cylinder, bringing the hydrogen into contact with a Zr alloy hydride packed in the cylinder under heating and removing the impurities contained in the crude hydrogen. CONSTITUTION:A refining cylinder 4 is packed with a zirconium alloy, a mixture 6 of the gaseous hydrogen 8 and rare gas 9 is introduced into the cylinder 4 to hydrogenate the alloy, and the hydrogenated zirconium alloy is formed. The cylinder 4 is then heated by a heater 3, a valve 7 is simultaneously opened to supply crude gaseous hydrogen 5 to the cylinder 4, hence the hydrogen is brought into contact with the hydrogenated zirconium alloy, and the impurities in the hydrogen 5 are collected and removed. The obtained high-purity gaseous hydrogen is discharged from an outlet pipe 2, cooled by a cooler 14 and drawn off from a pipe 16. |
