A pressurised water nuclear reactor has an auxiliary cooling circuit, for use during shutdown periods when the main primary coolant flow is suspended, and comprising pumps which draw hot water from the reactor and feed it through coolers and back to the reactor. Boric water from reservoir (95) is added to the circuit via duct (60) and various valves to connection (65) just upstream of the pumps. Downstream of the coolers the water returns to the reactor partly through the main inlet in the side of the reactor pressure vessel and partly through a duct (6) which feeds through the top cover of the vessel, so that this water flows down the control rod guide tubes straight to the reactor core and also cools any boiling water in the upper part of the vessel.
