The appts may eventually be placed below in the proximity of the external rear view mirror. The EM wave emitter is powered by an internal cell or battery or by the vehicle battery through the cigar lighter terminal and sends information to the receiver. Thus the trainee quickly develops an automatic response to check the mirror.
