The appts. for folding a plate (3) along a straight line incorporates top and bottom units (6, 10) respectively accommodating slidable clamping elements (7, 11) which are spring-loaded by means of compression springs (9, 12). The clamping element (7) houses a slidable blade (8) provided with an edge (27) along which the plate (3) is folded, while the bottom unit (10) has a seating (14) for a shaft (13) which is provided with at least one cam (25, 26). The force produced by the spring (9) is greater than the plate folding force plus the force produced by the spring (12). The clamping elements (7, 11) are provided respectively with surfaces (28, 24) which can contact and rotate the shaft (13). There is a spring which joins the blade (8) and the clamping element (7), and serves to retract the blade. The pivotable shaft (13) is provided with two cams (25, 26) which extend over the entire length of the shaft, and are oriented parallel to the folding edge (27).
