The hangers (4A) are moved manually or motor-driven at constant or variable speed along a conveyor (1). A fixed or movable camera (2) is mounted with its optical axis (OA) directed at right angles to the conveyor and in line with the hangers. When a signal (30) is given by an initiator (3), the camera takes a picture for processing by an electronic unit (6) which evaluates the bright and dark areas in an image memory (60), and increments a counter (Z) of the number of hangers crossing the optical axis.
