Restoration results from a combination of physical, chemical and microbiological reactions. The uplifted contaminated ground is preclassified into coarse and fine grain material over a screen. The fines enter an agitated boiler (2) to be mixed intimately with a water soluble solvent, extracting most or all of the DDT. The solvent, pref. butyl acetate, dissolves DDT and is also biodegradable. The residence time depends upon the DDT concentration; afterwards the suspension enters the separator (3) where the fines are sepd. for return to ground. Further processes follow, including aerobic and anaerobic degradation of the solvent-water-DDT mixture.
