Continuously variable transmission apparatus (12, 80) utilizing either a dual viscous clutch (86) or an impeller type hydrodynamic torque converter (40). In one embodiment (fig. 1), the hydrodynamic torque converter (40) is operatively connected to an input shaft (16) by interconnection to splitter (22), planet carrier (36) and an output shaft (18). The hydrodynamic torque converter (40) and splitter (22) is operable through a clutch assembly (38), an output planetary gear set (24) and a viscous coupling (74) between the carrier (73) and the ring gear (76) of the planetary gear set (24) to continuously change the speed between the input shaft (16) and output shaft (18). In the other embodiment (fig. 2), a dual stage viscous type coupling (82) is connected to the input shaft (16) through a planetary splitter (42) and to the output shaft (18) through a planetary gear set (84). The planet carrier (96) is connected to the sun gear (62) and the ring gear (91) in which the sun gear (62) and the ring gear (91) are viscously coupled for continuously varying the output shaft (18) rotation.
