Novel anthracycline derivatives represented by general formulae (I) and (II) and having a higher antitumor activity than that of the antibiotics practically used as carcinostatics, such as daunomycin and adriamycin, and a low toxicity. In formula (I) R represents hydrogen or hydroxyl.
