The cathode of a high-pressure, e.g. rare gas, discharge lamp consists of activated tungsten and has (a) a cylindrical portion 4 at its mounting end, (b) a cone-shaped, e.g. < 50 degrees, portion 5 at its discharge end, (c) a rounded apex to its conical discharge end with a radius of more than 0.2 mm. and (d) an annular groove in the cone-shaped portion. During operation, the cathode over less than half its length is at least 2000‹ C. The tungsten may contain less than 6 w/o., e.g. 3 w/o., thorium oxide, and may be hammered. The tungsten anode 2 has circumferential annular grooves. |
