Mfr. of composites with a metallic matrix and embedded reinforcing materials is claimed, in which a preform (1) of reinforcing material is placed in a preform holder (3) and the metallic material (2a) to form the matrix is placed in the area of the open side of the preform holder (3) and the preform holder with preform and the metallic material are heated to melt the metallic material, then subjected to pressure and subsequently cooled. The preform holder (3) is at least partially of a material of open porosity sufficient to absorb the air in the preform and the preform (1) lies against the inside surfaces of the holder (3) without intermediate spaces. A corresponding preform holder is also claimed.
