The novel feature in the prepn. of 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexanone (I) by quat. ammonium-catalysed reaction of isophorone with HCN at 80-100 deg.C/0.5-20 bar is that the ammonium catalyst is a salt of formula (II). R<1>-R<4> = 1-8C alkyl, 5-8C cycloalkyl, aryl, 7-18C aralkyl or 2-18C hydroxyalkyl; and X = HCO3 or -OC(O)OR<4>, with the proviso that R<4> = 1-8C alkyl when X = -OC(O)OR<4>. |
