The system includes a handheld transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter emits an IR beam with a wavelength of e.g. 950 nm at a fixed photoreceiver (21) via an optical body (31) having outer and inner sections (32,33) on a support (34). The prismatic hollow inner section (33) of the optical body may have a cover (37) to exclude contamination. The optical body intensifies and redirects the beam, the outer section (32) being an aspherical convex lens. The original beam is received on the lens periphery (35) at an angle (theta) of e.g. 5 deg. to the plane exit face (36) of the support. The intensified beam (22) is then incident on the receiver.
