The present invention relates to a novel class of sulfonamides of formula (I) wherein A is H or an organic residue defined in the description; B, if present, is -N(R2)-C(R3) (R3)-C(O)-; x is 0 or 1; R2 is H or a defined organic residue; R3 is H or an organic residue defined in the description; and D and D' and E are each an organic residue defined in the description. These compounds are aspartyl protease inhibitors. Also disclosed are pharmaceutical preparations containing said compounds. The compounds and pharmaceutical compositions of this invention are particularly well suited for inhibiting HIV-1 and HIV-2 protease activity and consequently, may be advantageously used as antiviral agents against the HIV-1 and HIV-2 viruses.
