PURPOSE:To permit the control and formation of a precise gap by obtaining a space for sealing of a liquid crystal by a transparent substrate formed with groove-like structure. CONSTITUTION:The groove structure having an electrode 4 for impression of voltage is formed to the transparent substrate 1 and a ferroelectric liquid crystal compsn. 5 is sealed therein. The electrode 4 is provided to a counter substrate 3. Chemical etching and anisotropic etching suitable for the substrate material is used to form the groove. Reactive etching by gaseous C2F2 and gaseous C2H4 is used in the case of obtaining a sharp end face by using, for example, quartz glass. The transmission directions of light to a basic cell 2 include the directions perpendicular 6 and parallel 7, 8 to and with the electrode plate and further the directions 9, 10, 11 inclined from the rays 6, 7, 8. The optical device which modulates the rays parallel with the electrode plate is thus obtd. |
