Date Jul. 23, 1992.A gradient bias magnetic field is applied to MR elements to improve precision of detection and prevent magnetic disturbance, and the structure of mounting the sensor is simplified. For this purpose, a magnet (10) is provided on the back surface side of the MR elements (12a, 12b) to generate a magnetic field at right angles with the above surfaces, and ferromagnetic members (34) are arranged on the sides of the MR elements (12a, 12b) to bend the magnetic flux phi generated by the magnet (10) such that a parallel bias magnetic field acts upon the MR elements (12a, 12b).
