A porous rigid mass is produced in the manufacture of acetylene gas accumulators by mixing line- and silica-containing or bearing materials with water in a container, adding to the mixture a predetermined quantity of "fluid pearls," closing the container and superheating the water therein, opening the container while at elevated temperature and drying the porous mass obtained. The "fluid pearls" comprise a water-insoluble shell of an alginic acid compound, e.g. calcium alginate, enclosing an aqueous solution, e.g. aqueous sodium alginate solution, and they disintegrate forming pores when the mass is dried. In a preferred embodiment, "fluid pearls" each not exceeding 1 mm. in diameter are added to a mixture of diatomaceous earth, lime, and water. Specification 979,780 is referred to. |
