PURPOSE:To provide a guest-host liquid crystal display element having higher light transmittance than a conventional one and having high contrast. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal element consists of, from the incident side of light, a first substrate 12, first electrode 13, first orienting film 14 to give the initial orientation angle to a liquid crystal, liquid crystal layer 15, second orienting film 16 facing to the first orienting film 14, second electrode 17 facing to the first electrode 13, and second substrate 18 facing to the first substrate 12. The light-absorbing state and the transparent state of the liquid crystal layer 15 can be controlled by an external electric field by mixing a dichroic dye and a minute amt. of optically active material into a nematic liquid crystal. In this liquid crystal display element, both of the first orienting film 14 and the second orienting film are treated to give 20 to 40 degree pretilt angle. |
