The coder includes use of luminance (Y) and weighted colour numerical signals (U,V) which are input to a convertor (21) sensitive to the chrominance and luminance signals. Signals are passed through a low frequency pre-enhancement filter (22). Signals are then passed to a partial separation filter (23). The output signals are passed to a digital frequency modulator (24) and a passband filter (27) coupled to a delay line. The signals are then synchronised (28) and passed to a summing processor (25) which generates a composite output luminance and chrominance signal. The signal is input to a D/A convertor (20) and a composite analogue output signal is produced.
