The diesel engine has a charge air collector (13) which can be limited in operation to one or more cylinders (11) by a charge air dividing flap (14) fitted into the collector. Each of the cylinders cut off from the charge air supply can receive a supply of exhaust gas from an exhaust gas collector (28) via a connecting pipe (27) provided with a switching valve (26). The charge air collector is divisible into two parts with different division ratios by two or more charge air dividing flaps.
