Optimisation of value or volume in splitting logs

The method of splitting logs optimises the phase of splitting the log lengthways into angular segments. The optimisation seeks to maximise the sum of a set of functions that represent the market value or the volume of the segments in relation to the angles of the segments. The dimensions of the log are measured (5) and the measurements delivered to a computer (6). The computer is programmed to display an image of the log and to provide a menu that allows entry of parameters. The program then determines the optimum set of angles and guides a laser (7) which marks the cutting lines on the end of the log. The splitter is then guided to the laser lines.
