(Heterocyclyl-benzyl)-piperazine derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new: n = 0 or 1; A = 1-17C alkylene, 2-17C alkenylene, 2-4C alkynylene, or a single bond; X = CO or SO2; Y = O, S, or N(R<11>); R<1>-R<6> = H; or 1-3 R<1>-R<6> = alkoxycarbonyl and/or 1-4C alkyl opt. mono-substd. by OH, alkoxy, alkylthio, dialkylamino or Ph (opt. mono-substd. by halo or alkyl); or 1-3 of R<1>, R<3> and R<5> = Ph opt. mono-substd. by alkyl or halo; R<7> = H, halo, alkyl, or alkoxy; R<8>, R<11> = H or alkyl; R<9> = H, 3-6C cycloalkyl, Ph (opt. mono-substd. by halo, 1-4C alkyl, CF3, alkoxy, CN, NO2, alkylsulphonyl or Ph), Ph (substd. by 2 CF3 or 2-5 halo or 1 halo and 1 alkyl), or naphthyl or tetrahydronaphthyl (opt. mono-substd. by F), or pyridyl, or thienyl (opt. mono-substd. by halo or alkyl); cpds. where A is a single bond, X=SO2 and R<9>=H are excluded.
