The invention concerns a method of rapidly detecting herbicidal active substances in water by using chloroplast thylakoids. The widespread use of pesticides and, in particular, herbicidal active substances in agriculture frequently leads to contamination of surface water and groundwater. For rapidly detecting herbicidal active substances in the drinking water limiting value concentration range by using chloroplast thylakoids, the invention proposes a method in which a mediator is used instead of the electron acceptor washed out of the photosynthetic electron transfer system when the chloroplast thylakoids are isolated, and the effect of the herbicidal active substance on electron transfer is determined.
