The carrier has one or more engravings (42), which are attached by a pass band (24) in a prearranged position on an engraving cylinder (6), and fixed. The pass band stays on the engraving cylinder during operation. The pass band is of magnetic material, and so can be attached to a magnetised band on the engraving cylinder. This region of the cylinder runs parallel to the axis of rotation of the cylinder. The cylinder material may be a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. Alternatively, an adhesive may be used to attach the engravings to the cylinder.
