A linear reluctance motor has a grooved stator facing the pole shoes of the rotor. The pole shoes are made of soft magnetic material, separated by permanent magnetic material, and carry coils. The coils are fed with two-phase AC, there being a phase angle of ninety degrees between the coils. The pole shoes have grooved faces which match the grooves in the stator.
