A steel scale (1) has a nickel coating and at least one surface region as a scale division carrying area. The surface quality of the region (2) carrying the scale divisions is equivalent to that of a surface produced by equipment for processing optical surfaces. A form with the cross-section of the scale is made from unalloyed steel and is stress relieved by heat treatment. The scale surface region is ground plane and then ground by equipment suitable for processing optical surfaces. The scale is then coated with nickel at least over the scale division region. This region is polished with optical surface processing equipment and the divisions (3) are applied to the nickel-coated, polished surface region.
