Letter box contg. automatic franking unit

The slot accepts flat pieces of mail, esp. letters and postcards. A guide unit (4) is installed in the letter box (1) next to the slot (2) for conveying the piece of mail (3) to a printing unit cancelling the stamp by printing place, date and time. The guide unit finally removes the piece of mail from the printing unit for depositing it in the box. The printing unit has a reading head installed near the edge of the piece of inserted mail for reading the position of a postage stamp (9), e.g. optically or by probing sensor, magnetically or inductively. The printing unit is so controlled and/or the piece of mail is so pushed through the guide unit that the stamp is franked by the stamping unit (10).
