A stabilised light source (26) and monochromator (28) project light via an optical coupler (16) into a bundle of fibres (14). The light passes through an hemispherical measuring head (22) with a circular rim (23) in contact with the plane surface of the sample (24). A bundle of exit fibres (18) is interfaced (44) to a pref. CCD camera (46) linked to a central processor (30) with memory (48). The fibre ends are oriented radially w.r.t. the centre (O) of the hemispherical surface.
